Risks and Potentials of Education Technology and AI

Education Technology (Edtech) and AI are often hailed as facilitators of learning, yet they also face criticism. In this panel, we discuss the benefits as well as the risks of educational technologies, particularly considering the vast amounts of data required for AI to function. Additionally, we address the ethical questions that these developments in the field of learning, teaching, and education bring about.
The following experts will speak at this panel:
- Adrienne Wiliams: Researcher at DAIR («Distributed AI Research Institute», founded by Timnit Gebru, the former co-lead of Google’s Ethical Artificial Intelligence Team), former Junior High teacher, warns about the missing regulations around education technology and corporate owned schools.
- Sigrid Hartong: Professor of sociology at the Helmut Schmidt University in Germany, leader of SMASCH – Smart Schools: Smart Schools, which develops and evaluates concepts for digital transformation in schools.
- Jessica Dehler: Executive director of the Centre for Learning Science at EPFL in Switzerland, expert for learning technologies with four years of experience in the EdTech sector.
This panel takes place within the framework of the event series «Education and Digitality», organized by the research center Education and Digital Transformation. The event series explores how potentials for digitization in education are being realized in research and practice, as well as the risks that arise.
